Stephen’s Story

Site created on August 28, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.  Here is the backstory.
After experiencing a myriad of symptoms on and off during July and August, Steve went to the ER on 8/8/21 with a high fever and pain in his shoulder.  All of his vitals were bad upon arrival and they ran a host of tests, including testing for COVID (which was negative).  After being there for several hours, they discovered a mass on his liver and admitted him for additional testing.   He remained in the hospital for the next 5 nights.  Through the additional testing that week (and the week following) they confirmed that he has Lymphoma.  Specifically it is Stage 3, Diffuse large b-cell.   We have spent the last 2 weeks getting additional testing, 2nd opinions, deciding on the medical team and enrolling in a clinical trial.  Treatment will be 18 weeks, once a week infusions with additional medications given at home.  Your prayers are the best thing you can do for us.  We are praying that we selected the right medical team, that he gets the real drug in the clinical trial (not the placebo) and that the treatment is effective at a total cure with minimal side effects and no long term damage.  Thank you for your love and support.  It means so much to us.  You are welcome to share this site with anyone who is interested in keeping up with Steve's situation.

Journal entry by Kim Mulkern

Today we offer prayers of thanksgiving - yet again!   Steve had 3 rounds of tests ordered after our last visit in 5/9/22.  We had all of those performed and we received all clear results today.  Hallelujah!   We are so very grateful.  Whew!  (Feel a bit like we dodged a bullet!)

Of course,  now we need to figure out what is going on with his spine.  We have been referred to a spine specialist.   So more waiting for a course of treatment.   Our oncologist offered no information about how they might address the issue other than to say that they may want him to wear a brace of some kind.  He also said they will follow up and watch this new area on the film very closely.  We are anxious to get on with the new doc so we can find some options to help Steve feel better.

Thank you again for your tireless support and prayers.  We are so grateful for all of you!   Much love and hugs!
