Stephanie’s Story

Site created on August 15, 2018

Stephanie was having the time of her life on her first trip to the Sturgis Rally since 2009.  She, Greg and their great friend Joe made it out there without any major issues.  She had so been looking forward to this vacation, since this was her first major motorcycle trip after beating breast cancer in 2015.  They arrived on Sunday, August 5 and did some riding around the beautiful western South Dakota landscape Monday and Tuesday.  Unfortunately, on Tuesday afternoon, on their way to lunch, Stephanie lost control of her bike in a merge situation and flew over her handlebars.  It all happened so fast.  Greg and Joe were protecting her the best they could (with Joe in front and Greg riding behind) but there was nothing they could do to stop this tragedy from happening.  Stephanie locked her brakes and her bike went one way, she went the other.  She went over the handlebars and landed on her head, causing a TBI (traumatic brain injury) and many broken bones on her left side.  She has been in a coma since the day of the accident.  As you can imagine, this has been very difficult on the entire family.  Steph has so many friends and a family whom love her very much.  Those who know her know that she is just an incredible person, inside and out.

Newest Update

Journal entry by The Boyer Family

So my mom has had a few new events recently.

Per my own neurologist's recommendation, I made an appointment with Dr Ravi Kasi at Rush University Medical Center. (Google him, he has an amazing reputation.) He gave us a list  of instructions, near the top of the list was getting mom's head put back together. He seemed shocked that she wasn't  at least wearing a helmet to protect her fragile head.  She will see a neurosurgeon (also at Rush) in the near future to discuss this.

Mom had a CT scan on 24 Apr for the first time since Sep. We will discuss those results with her doctors at her follow up appointment.

Mom is definitely aware when she has visitors. She holds our hands, follows simple commands (raise your eyebrows, wiggle your toes, smile, squeeze my hand, etc.) and she loves to listen to music. We have meetings with her care team at Glen Oaks about every other month and we are mostly confident that they are taking good care of her. Her RT is very skilled and will hopefully have her trach out this summer. We did not understand what a slow process this would be.

Once again, mom needs visitors. We fear that she will get lonely and depressed, thus losing hope and giving up on recovery.  With this new doctor, she is in the beginning stages of finally speeding up her recovery and for that, we are grateful.

Again, thank you for your thoughts. Mom is the type of person who would he there for any one of her friends or family in need. Please consider visiting her. I know it's not easy, trust me. But mom loves us all and now it's her turn to benefit from our generosity.
