Stella’s Story

Site created on December 12, 2023

This page is in support of Stella Rosshalgh and the Ross/Rosshalgh/Greenhalgh family as we help Stella through recovery from her surgery.

Just after she was born, our now 4 1/2 year old, Stella, was diagnosed with a heart condition after her doctor heard a murmur. She has an atrial septal defect, which is a hole in the wall between the upper chambers of her heart. Although it’s seems to currently have little effect on her, it’s is something that most certainly would cause complications as she got older if left untreated.

Just after Christmas (the 28th), Stella will be having open heart surgery to repair this hole, which unfortunately is too large to repair with a less evasive method. We met with the surgeon a few weeks ago, and heard all the details of the procedure and recovery. Even with the skilled team at Children’s, and high probability of everything going very well, it’s still a scary and stressful event. We will both be taking off time from work to focus all of our energy on caring for Stella in her recovery (and taking care of baby Lucy too!) for several weeks.  The surgeon told us that kiddos recover surprisingly fast, hopefully just 4 to 6 weeks, although she’ll have to stay home from her judo class for 8!

We created this page for those interested in keeping up on Stella’s journey.  Thank you so much for your love and  support, we are so appreciative.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Michelle Ross

Stella had a follow up appointment last week, and everything went great! She had an echocardiogram and a visit with her cardiologist, Dr. Shepard, and everything is continuing to heal spectacularly.  She is now released from ‘sternal precautions’ with the direction to ease back into normal activities - if we can slow her down!  As you can see from the photos, she is excited to be climbing and such again! She’s been so good at being mindful of her body, and now several times has asked for confirmation on certain things… “Can I do pushups? Can I carry my backpack? Can I climb this? Can I have a piggyback ride?” She’s so happy to have the answer to all of the above be ‘yes’!  She will have another few follow up appointments over the next several month to continue to monitor her healing heart, but we are past the highest risk of complications in healing.  It is amazing how quickly she has recovered!

We likely won’t be updating here again, but please feel free to reach out to us if you want to connect.

Thank you again for all of the love and support, we are appreciative beyond imagine, having this strong network of family and friends made this whole thing a bit easier.

Peace and love to all,
Michelle, Michael, Stella & Lucy
