Journal entry by Emily VanWieren

On Wednesday I received my 16th chemo treatment, marking the end of the first leg of this journey. Praise the Lord!

Last week was a rough week, as I had fevers and aches and chills on and off without much explanation. We think it could have been a virus, as all other bacterial causes were ruled out. Thankfully my white blood cells were not low, so I managed to stay out of the hospital. My oncologist gave me the option of delaying chemo for another week, but I decided to continue forward with the plan and will be focusing on resting extra this weekend.

On Monday I had an MRI which showed no masses!! I couldn’t believe it when I saw the results.

The next step is surgery, which is scheduled for May 17. The pathology results will determine the next steps of treatment and the overall prognosis. Please pray for “Pathologic Complete Response” - which means no cancer cells are left after chemotherapy. And also that the lymph nodes are clear so that I do not need to have all the lymph nodes removed (which increases chances of lymphedema of the arm). I also ask for prayers for the anesthesia because I know just enough (being a pharmacist) about those medications to be nervous.

We also have some plans for Zach and I to have a getaway for a long weekend up north before surgery, which is much needed for both of us.

Thank you all for your continued support! We’re pausing to celebrate this milestone. And we are looking toward the future of this journey one step at a time.
