Journal entry by Lisa Pearce

I will reiterate it, July is the worst month for sports fans. There are four signature sporting events in the month of July, two of them are held in Great Britain, and one by the frog eaters. The only big event here, in the U.S. is the MLB All-Star Game. You know there is a problem when most social media posts are about Kate Middleton’s son’s birth. Well, at least America fought for independence so it wouldn’t have to celebrate a royal birth. I mean why the fuck should I care? Prince William went balls deep up into Kate Middleton, might have tried non-missionary positions, awkwardly, and a boy was born 9 months later. I bet it was boring sex and wish it was a girl instead. It’s the birth of a child, not the birth of the dude who is going to save the world from global warming. I won’t buy into the hype surrounding the birth of a child (with celebrity parents), even if the baby is named North West (nice try Kanye), unless it is two people, with top of the pyramid genes likely to create a Lebron 2.0, like Kevin Durant and Monica Wright. That’s what I call investing in your children before their birth. First, they are making sure their children will be athletic freaks, then they will worry about the rest. Anyway, back to my point.

The two events in Great Britain include the British Open, the third of the PGA Tour’s four major tournaments, and Wimbledon, which is a carryover from the end of June. The one organized in frog eating land is Le Tour de France. Otherwise, the NFL, NBA and NHL are all dead in July, as are both major college sports. NASCAR has some good races in July, however, such as the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona, and the Camping World RV Sales 301 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, probably the highlight of the year in the “Live Free or Die” state.

So what are we left with, when there is nothing going on in the sports world? We re-watch highlights, top moments, scavenge all sports websites for anything that would quench this thirst for some quality, manly sports, like starving hyenas. This boredom led me to come up with the idea to write on what I consider the most clutch moments in sports. And so here is a list of my favorite clutch moments, though not in order. Don’t be too butthurt if I left your team out. Spoiler alert: I left baseball out.

Krushelnyski’s OT Penalty Shot Winner (Colorado College versus Denver University)

Bias time. I am including my alma mater. I didn’t have the privilege to go to a school with big D1 teams. But I went to Colorado College where the only D1 teams are men’s hockey and women’s soccer. Denver University is the arch rival, and so every game against them is filled with hatred. Remember that Austin Rivers buzzer beater (three pointer) against UNC, in Chapel Hill? Well, this is the equivalent of that at Colorado College. I was at this game and the roof almost caved in. Winning against your arch rival is one thing. Winning against them off a penalty shot, in over-time, is fucking great. However, winning off a penalty shot in OT, while busting a Forsberg’s paralyzer, in a nationally televised contest is absolute liquid gold. This was number 2 on Sports Center’s Top 10.
