Journal entry by Gabrielle Benintende —
Yesterday we got the news that no Mother, Father, Sister, Brother, Aunt, Uncle, Grandma, Grandpa, or Cousin, should ever have to hear. Our beloved 7 year old Sophia has a very rare cancer called Ewing sarcoma. The tumor around her left rib cage is much bigger than what was expected and there are some tumors in her left lung as well . We are praying that this is the point of origin as well as that it hasn't metastasized. There are so many questions and so little answers. We don't even know what stage the cancer is at. Tomorrow is her PET scan followed by a bone marrow biopsy Tuesday next week. We pray we will get the answers we need. Her treatment will undoubtedly be surgery, chemo, and radiation. Needless to say the road ahead is long. One thing we do know is that this cancer is so rare her treatment will not be able to be in her hometown at Roswell. We are all doing our research as to the next best place that specializes in this type of cancer. We will keep everyone posted. Her parents are doing everything imaginable to get the best care possible for their little girl, while taking care of her older sister, as well as run their own business. Please pray! To know Sophia is to love her. We cannot imagine living in a world without her. Our lives are forever changed.
