Journal entry by Hilary Webster —
Simon had a cardiology appointment yesterday complete with ultrasound of his heart. The cardiologist believes that Simon's VSD might actually be decreasing in size. Yay! The next questions are how exactly this is happening and whether it will completely close and create an adequate seal. Unfortunately, we may not know those answers for a few more months, but in the meantime, this is great news. We are at least moving in the right direction. Simon may still end up needing surgery in the long term but right now he is not showing signs of heart failure and we can continue to monitor the hole without any concerns for his day-to-day health. He'll have another cardiology appointment and ultrasound in three months.
Simon also saw his GI doctor yesterday, and she is very happy with his weight gain. He's now 13 pounds 11 ounces and steadily moving up the growth chart. Simon does seem to have developed an intolerance to milk proteins, so we are working with the GI doctor to find a more suitable formula for him. However, this is a very common problem for babies and not at all related to his other health concerns.
We are happy with the progress that Simon is making and so grateful for everyone's continued support!
