Shirley’s Story

Site created on November 1, 2019

Welcome to Shirley’s CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family & friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support, words of hope and encouragement!

On Tuesday, October 29th, Shirley suffered a significant Ischemic stroke to the left side of her cerebellum while attending her favorite exercise class in her senior living complex. Her class instructor and classmates sprang into action tending to her immediate needs while the ambulance was on its way.

Shirley is a determined lady who has shown incredible strength and courage from the moment she arrived at the hospital. She was admitted to the ICU in the evening on October 29th. The following morning she started to exhibit further signs and symptoms of a stroke and underwent a barrage of tests Wednesday and Thursday. Shirley has impairment to the left side of her body that has affected the left side of her face, speech, swallowing and mobility of her left extremities. Today (Friday, November 1st) we concentrated on working to get her strength back. She made great strides with swallowing and was even able to graduate to a much broader menu. She had evaluations with Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and speech today as well.

She continues to improve every day and in true Shirley style has been giving her absolute all to every part of therapy. Her Neurologists and medical staff have cleared her to transfer to an acute rehabilitation facility in the upcoming days. This has all been a tough pill to swallow for Shirley, as she truly cherishes and takes great pride in her independence. We have full confidence that she will do everything in her power knock her therapy out of the park. She is a warrior and a fighter. We are so proud of her for her strength and courage this week. She will do great things and her family and friends will be right there with her the whole way.

We will post updates as they come. Thank you for your support.

Journal entry by Connie Thiewes

Shirley has done remarkably well since moving back to Orchard Path in Assisted Living. She is now able to use her walker to get to the dining room for lunch and dinner. She also can go down to the workout facility to use the NuStep and weights, everyday for 35 minutes, plus walking the halls.
