Journal entry by Lisa Swain

Hello all,
This is Lisa and I'm posting below on behalf of Sheryl's son, Shawn...

After what has been a little bit of a roller coaster journey, on Thursday 2/2/23, my mom decided to discontinue her current treatment plan and to return home under hospice care.

To provide a brief recap, back in August of 2022, mom was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer called Glioblastoma.  Initially this caused some difficulty in finding the right word to say in a sentence, writing/typing, and anything to do with numbers (which was particularly frustrating for her as a retired book-keeper!).  She had surgery to remove the tumor, followed 6 weeks later by radiation and chemotherapy treatments.  Beginning in November, she suffered a series of health setbacks, followed by a modest rebound.  The problem has ultimately been that none of these rebounds would carry her back to her previous level of strength and ability.

The decision to transition from seeking treatment was not one she made lightly, but it was one she made for herself (and I take great comfort in that).  From day one she always wanted to fight, and has done so valiantly every step of the way.  But as it has become apparent that her body isn't responding the way any of us would have hoped it to, her attention turned squarely to spending whatever time she has left seeing and talking with her friends and family.  She wanted to go home, and that's what we made happen yesterday (Sat 2/4).

I want to make something very clear however, this is not my mom "giving up".  Rather this is her yielding ultimate control of her fate into the hands of her Heavenly Father.  We still believe for a miracle here on Earth, but we know that if that doesn't happen (I would give anything to make that so), the greatest miracle of them all will be when my mom hears the words she's spent a lifetime earning, "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matt 25).

Please know that my mom WANTS to see people.  So if you would like to see her, please come by.  While, for the moment, its not necessary to call ahead of time, if you'd prefer, please call/text me at 703-937-7684.

Thank you all so much for your prayers, cards, and kind words.  They have all meant so much to my mom and our family!
