Shelli’s Story

Site created on January 19, 2024

Shelli was officially diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic adenocarcinoma on January 4, 2024.   The current care plan is chemotherapy.  The good news continues to be that Shelli is young and does not have any preexisting health conditions.  Shelli is feeling ready to beat this.  Her main source of motivation is to have as much time as possible with her husband Jim, her kids and her 3 grandchildren.  Shelli has spent her whole life taking care of others and now she needs our support.  Our plan is to use this site to update friends and family.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Shelli Matheson

Hello,

Here's the latest updates on my journey.

Yesterday, I was supposed to have chemotherapy.  Because it was a Thursday, we were set up to have the pump taken out Saturday at home.  Unfortunately, my white blood cell counts and neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) were low.  There is medicine to raise neutrophils, but it needs to be administered when the pump is removed.  It could not be done on a Saturday.

My chemo has been moved to Monday and the neutrophils medicine will be given on Wednesday.  On another note, my platelets are at 80, getting close to the minimum of 75 for chemo.  I'm hoping these extra days will give them time to increase before chemo.

On the good news front:

  • My protein and potassium were low in the last blood draw.  Both are back in the normal range.
  • My side effects have been minimal and manageable.
  • I didn't have chemo on my birthday as was scheduled.  Instead, I was able to hang out with family and friends.
  • My doctors, nurses, and other members of my care team have been fantastic!  They are patient with my endless questions.  They are also very gentle and caring.

Thank you to everyone who celebrated my birthday with me this week!  I have the best family and friends!
