Shelia’s Story

Dear friends and family,

Shelia was diagnosed with RSV on Dec. 12th. It really wiped her out but she had started to feel a little bit better last Saturday/Sunday. Unfortunately, she started to feel significantly worse combined with an excruciating headache by Wednesday which increased overnight.

Thursday morning, Jim brought Shelia in to the ER. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and went through all levels of the hospital as her conditioned worsened to the point of needing to be placed on a ventilator and kept in a medically induced coma.

She is now diagnosed with pneumonia and encephalitis. Please check in the journal to see the most recent updates. We will keep this site up to date as we learn more.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to each of us to share love, prayers or offers of help. Right now her exposure is being kept to an absolute minimum and no visitors are allowed. She is in UNC Neuroscience ICU.

Dear Friends and Loved Ones:

After leading a truly remarkable life, Shelia Tucker Deal died on January 3, 2024 at Watauga Medical Center.

Details about Shelia’s celebration of life, and opportunities to support an educational endowment in her name, can be found below. All details are included via Hampton Funeral and Cremation Service, as they are in charge of the arrangements (see link below)

—A celebration of life will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Boone United Methodist Church.

—The family will receive friends Friday, January 12th, from 4:00 until 7:00 PM, at Boone United Methodist Church.

(Please note: as it is simply “that time of year” here in Boone, the wearing of masks is gently encouraged)

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that any donations be made to the Shelia Tucker Deal Endowment c/o The North Carolina Community Foundation. All checks or donations can be mailed to the office of Jim Deal at PO Box 311, Boone, NC 28607. The endowment will be established to be used to benefit students in need at Hardin Park Elementary School.
