Shannon’s Story

Site created on January 12, 2022

Welcome to our CaringBridge website, which we created to keep you all up to date in one place on Shannon's health situation.  Colin and Shannon and the rest of our family appreciate your prayers, support, and care.  They are very helpful to all of us during this rough time.   More importantly, your words of hope and encouragement are critical to boost Shannon's spirits as she travels this journey.  She will be able to read any comments and responses you provide, which we pray will reassure her during this challenging time.

After several weeks of an on-and-off-again fever, Shannon was admitted to the hospital on Saturday, January 8th with significantly concerning blood chemistry.  After several blood transfusions and multiple tests, including a bone marrow biopsy, she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoid Leukemia.  This was sudden, unexpected, devastating and life-changing news for all of us, especially given her lifelong health and fitness.  She began 30 straight days in the hospital for chemotherapy treatment on January 13th at Kaiser Roseville Hospital, which is expected to be very difficult.  In addition, with current COVID protocols, Colin is the only visitor that will be allowed in the hospital.  Following that, she faces several additional stays in the hospital over the next several months for a week at a time with a two-week break in between for additional chemotherapy treatment.  Ultimately, the doctors' goal is to get her to a point that she can receive a stem cell transplant at Stanford, which will entail a 3-month stay there.

For those that are new to this site, we are appreciative of Caring Bridge and the opportunity it gives us to easily provide daily updates to so many people.  We do want to make sure that you understand that any contributions you make through the site ("Tributes") go to the Caring Bridge organization (not Shannon).  If you did make a donation to Caring Bridge that was unintended, please contact Caring Bridge at 651-452-7940 and they will refund your donation.  Those wanting to donate toward the extra expenses that Shannon and Colin will incur can go to the "Ways to Help" tab and click the "Go Fund Me" link.  Thank you for your generosity!

We will provide updates and more specific and timely prayer requests on this platform so that you can partner with Shannon, Colin, Deacon and Makenna and the rest of our family in supporting her and reminding her of how much we love her.  We are grateful for each of you.

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 5:10-11)

For those who remember, it has been exactly one year since Shannon received her stem cell transplant - on April 26, 2022. They call today her new “first birthday.”  As a family we are marking this important day with a family trip to Hawaii, one of Shannon’s favorite places.  We are incredibly grateful to God for the physical healing that has taken place, and we have been encouraged by Shannon’s steady progress.  Despite the growing relief that Shannon is “out of the woods,” we are all (especially Shannon) still processing the emotional trauma and the unavoidable spiritual questions that result, as well as the real losses that one must come to grips with.  Beyond the physical healing, the restoration in those other areas is likely to take quite a bit longer.

In all of this, we remain deeply grateful for the support and prayers that have been extended to Shannon this past 16 months.  The promise in 1 Peter above is one that we continue to hold on to, as we acknowledge that it is God who ultimately makes us strong, firm and steadfast.  For us, he has done so in countless ways through you and hundreds of others in the community of faith. Thank you for your care.
