Shannon’s Story

Site created on May 21, 2018

My name is Shannon and I am 34 years old. I am married to the most amazing husband, nathan. We have been married for 7 years this august. I am also a Mom to the most  amazing girls! Natalie is 3 and Braylie is 6 months old. I love my family more than anything. I am the middle child to Rick and Cheryl Edgar. I have an older sister Brandi and a younger brother Aaron. I am a kindergarten teacher in the most amazing district. My school family is my second family.

My journey started around the beginning of may. I started feeling kind of off, like I had a cold. I just blew it off cause my youngest had just been sick. About a week later Nathan noticed a lot of bruises on the back of my leg and arms. Again blew it off cause I had bruises like that before. Then the leg and body aches began with headaches and more bruising getting darker and bigger. I just started feeling exhausted and could barely make it through the day. So on mother's day I told Nathan I would go to the doctor the next day. The next day I got sent home from school with concerns of mono. I went to my appointment and my doctor was very concerned so she started the blood work. By 6:30 that night I was in the hospital. The next day we received the news. Our hearts shattered. But God kept us strong for our girls. Nathan was by my side the whole time. The following day I had my bone marrow biopsy which confirmed I had ALL luekemia. The next day we goodbye to our babies and they transferred me to UT Southwestern.

Though the road ahead will be long, God is in control! He is leading us through this fire with His guiding hands. He has put everything into place with our amazing Support system of family, friends and church family. Please know we have felt your prayers and God is showing them to us. We love you and this is a battle I will win with God to get home to my girls, family and friends!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Shannon Barnett

Well, I finished my last round of chemo for this phase on Wednesday! I was sick for a couple of days after my last chemo, but I've been feeling a lot better and been able to get up and move around. My platelet numbers have finally come up to where my numbers are normal! Huge praise! My white blood cell count is still very low, but they say they are the last things to come up. But the biggest praise is I get to go home on Tuesday after my bone marrow biopsy!!! I get to see my babies!!! I am SO ready to be home with my girls! At least for a couple of days :). I will come back to Dallas on Friday to meet more with my doctor and find the results for my bone marrow biopsy and hopefully hear I am in remission. Then we will discuss the next phase of treatment I will do. Nathan and I just want to say thank you again for all your thoughts and prayers for our family during this time. We will never know why God walks us through these things, but we know He is walking with us and guiding us. As the doctor said, this is a marathon, and God is going to me and my family to the finish line.
