Selah’s Story

Site created on January 7, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website..
Selah woke up Christmas morning 2019, not wanting to open gifts. We had a miss diagnosis of the flu at first, but when her health over the next week drastically decreased, we just knew something was wrong. On January 1st, 2020 selah’s was admitted into the hospital with sepsis due to a kidney infection we didn’t know she had. We were socked that our beautiful 8 year old was so sick. This lead us to many more hospital stay, pokes, and prodding. Ultimately a surgery in 2022 that failed, and now another one in April of 2023.
The end diagnosis is kidney reflux or VUR. She also has a severely misbehaving bladder, urethral diverticulum, a bladder diverticulum, and anatomy differences with in that system. Her body is fighting to keep her kidneys healthy, but sadly she has kidney scarring and lost of function already.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Rachel Bullivant

I’m so sorry it has been such a long wait for a CaringBridge update. I can assure you that was not my intention, but life has been more than busy. lol
On Wednesday after Selah’s doctor appointment my stomach started to not feel the greatest unfortunately this lead to about a 72 hour spend of time where I was down and out with what appears to be the stomach flu or maybe food poisoning…. It began Wednesday evening and continued well into Thursday night. My stomach even today is still not 100% I think goodness the worst of it is over. It is amazing and such a relief no one else got it.
The older boys and Josh came down on Thursday night late. We had planned to spend a little time at the zoo in the morning/mid afternoon. Last time at the zoo it was too cold to be outdoors at all. Selah was cleared on Wednesday to start walking and to encourage walking. So we thought it was perfect but…long story short her sweet little brother Colton fell at the park just perfectly onto a piece of playground equipment and got a deep laceration just above his eye. If you have ever seen a head injury you know how much they bleed! I was covered, he was covered in blood, not the zoo trip any of us had in mind. One of the workers at the Zoo had the EMT come over and help up get sorted. She said it seemed we needed stitches or for it to be glued and he probably should be evaluated for a concussion. So off to the ER we want… 4 hours later with a glued up eyebrow we finally left the ER. Lol I think the greatest part of the story is that the first thing Colton said he wanted to do after our doctor visit go to the park. Lol 😂 love my spunky little boy.
So that is a little of what we’ve been up to a bunch of craziness lol now you’re all here Selah’s doctor appointment.
On Wednesday, we met with Dr. Vander. We also repeated the uroflow test.
Again, this is where they use an ultrasound to determine how much urine is in her bladder. Then she pees on especially design toilet, and it calculates how much output she had and what the flow looks like as her bladder releases. Then we do another ultrasound to measure if her bladder was fully empty or not. An average adult female can hold around 500 ML’s

Post reading with the ultrasound was 413ML’s
The amount she voided was 523ML’s
The amount remaining in her bladder was 80ML’s

What Dr. Vandersteen I are hypothesizing is that the uroflow isn’t always 100% accurate and how much urine is actually in the bladder to begin with and what is in the bladder after. He said they usually count for about a 25% inaccuracy. He thinks she is voiding well, but we are to keep an eye on it. He was very happy with all of her incisions look. He was happy that the therapy that she’s been doing has been helping. We are scheduled for two more rounds this week.
We go home on next Saturday 😍 And we can’t wait!!

Thank you as always to each of you for the love and support. For reaching out and understanding when left gets busy. We are so so thankful.

God bless,
Rachel
