Journal

This week was quiet as far as appointments and therapy. Dad settled in at home over the weekend and then was ready to tackle some farm items off his list that needed attention. Like most can expect, if he goes hard one day the next day he’s pretty tired.

Thursday he had his speech evaluation. I didn’t know how much to share on this but Kaitlyn went with mom and dad and sent us all how it went and I think it really sheds light on the aphasia and language piece of the stroke he’s dealing with. This is what she sent us…

Started with having him say his name. Trouble with this then she said it with him then he did better. Preston is hard to say. Was able to say Cindy once she said the “s” sound. Then practiced saying Janesville and that he could do if he broke it down.

Had to answer yes or no to questions and this was more difficult,  he answered quickly after she asked but maybe got 50% right. Some questions were, does March come before June? He said no. Can paper burn in a fire? He said no. He was able to answer correctly when it came to him personally.

Next was identifying objects. She would lay out 3 different things and ask him to point to one of them he got 5 out 6 correct. Then she moved onto 6 pictures of objects on a piece of paper and he was able to identify 6 out of 6 things. Then she went over shapes. 3 out of 6 on this one. Next was 6 letters and he wasn’t able to point to the correct one at all so 0 out of 6 on that. Colors he got 5 out of 6 but then realized he pointed to yellow for green when she asked to point to yellow. You could see the light bulb go off.

She then had him point to things in the room we were in. Window, chair, table, light, and door. He could not do this. He was not comprehending what she wanted him to do.

Lastly she had him try saying 5 words and repeating her. Bed, nose, pipe, window, and banana. Again this was very difficult.

He was able to say 400 when she asked about crops, a lot of numbers came out when she was asking him .

And she suggested starting with 2 days a week. They are 45 minute sessions. We asked about the 3 days a week and she said we could possibly up it to 3 if lindsey thinks that’s a good fit. She said they like to see how well people can tolerate 2 45 minute sessions without getting tired .
