Scott’s Story

Site created on August 27, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On Saturday, August 26th Scott was in a motorcycle accident while riding for the annual Autism poker ride, and was med flighted to Gundersen Lutheran. He unfortunately received some pretty significant injuries from this accident. He broke 11 ribs and has a very severe open fracture to his left lower leg where the tibia and fibula bone actually came through the skin. He lost a significant amount of skin in that area.  He had his first wash out to clean the wound on Saturday the 25th and an external fixator was placed to stabilize the bones. The orthopedic trauma surgery team has been following. This is a very severe injury. The plastic surgery team will need to be involved. This will be a long road for him unfortunately and he will need a few surgeries in order to repair this. He will transfer to either UW Health or Mayo Rochester where they will do the surgery and repair the skin around the injury. This will be a long road for him but with time he will recover.  The outpouring of support, well wishes, and prayer has been incredible.

Thank you to all of you who have offered help and asked about monetary donations or a benefit. There has been a GoFundMe set up to aid in Scott's recovery found here: https://gofund.me/42368cec  Any donations that are made to CaringBridge go directly to CB for the cost of running their site. Donations to the GoFundMe will go directly to the Neumeister family to help with the growing costs of hospital bills, travel and lodging once Scott is transferred for his next surgery, the cost of medical equipment and an entry ramp for their home, and of course loss of income over the months to come. Thank you all again for your support. We are blessed to be a part of such an amazing community.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Lisa Neumeister

Been awhile since we updated everyone.

The muscle and skin graft is doing great. Doctors are very happy with it. He has been able to put some weight on his leg.
Unfortunately there hasn’t been much bone growth with the fibula. They have scheduled another surgery for November 21st to do a bone graft from the femur in his left thigh.
We pray that will be enough bone however doctors feel he probably will need one or two more grafts.

He is still having double vision from the concussion which is the most bothersome for him. They have tried glasses with prism. They help some but not enough. If the vision doesn’t resolve within a month he will have to see a surgeon for this as well.

The separated shoulder seems to be the least of our worries right now. They will try to handle this after we can get him back on his feet.

We can’t thank everyone enough for all the prayers, texts, calls, visits, gifts and leading a hand for what ever we have needed! You all are truly a blessing!
