Newest Update

Journal entry by scott kopczynski

Hello,
Been a couple busy weeks working here on my job...battling Cancer. About 10 evenings ago I started with bleeding in the throat.  We arrived at the ER at 11 pm and left 2 hours later after giving up on being seen any time soon.  Bleeding has since subsided😂

Monday starts with am scan and labs.  First shot of the day delivers contrast through an IV.   Second shot of the day is for labs...Hello Monday Morning!!!  Week is starting out fast and furious.

Tuesday's morning shift was action packed.  Started off with being back in radiation.  This time it's to treat my spine (just sounds bad) and pelvis (sounds strong).  The good news is I only have 3 sessions.  Each session is like a double header in baseball.

The first game is all about the T6 spine treatment.  Early innings involved getting set up and positioning.  Lay like a sack of potatoes as the technician drags and contorts my lower body by grabbing the towel that separates me with the long, shiny steel plate I'm lying on.  Then put your arms over your head and position wrists on what look like shackles.  Last 6 innings are a real battle with pain.  Laying on a steel plate hips contorted and hands above in shackles laying perfectly still as the machine rotates around you and beams blast targets painted on your body.  This one ends up going extra innings as my on-fire shoulder and arms moved ever so slightly.   After a couple extra innings of repositioning and more blasts the game is mercifully over for this fan.

The second game of the DH is with the Pelvis.  This is a much quicker game.  Lie on back-hands on your chest-perfectly still wins a 10-0 blow out in favor of me.   A few hours later the morning shift is over.

Time to head back home for a little rest.  Wake up and get ready for the afternoon game.  Coach thinks I need more practice, so head back to the old ballpark for more labs and a 3rd shot of courage in two days.  The final afternoon game of the day was spent waiting in the dugout.  Dr B. made an appearance in the 9th inning.  Overall, the game was pretty painless.  Here's some highlights:

  • No known cause to the bleeding throat was identified.
  • No apparent change on existing blood clot in lower lag.
  • Newest cancer in my adrenal gland has not grown since 5 sessions of recent radiation.
  • Rest of the cancer throughout body appears stable. Plan is to keep taking the targeted therapy pills and follow up with next Scan in June or July depending on how I feel.
  • Follow up with doc next month.

Barring no change, I get a month off from Dr B... a little vacation.  I had sinus surgery and a few weeks ago and that Dr. wants to see me, so I'll work him into second shift next week.

Tomorrow starts a new day with a couple of hours of pretending to be a sack of potatoes and not twitch a muscle while stretched out on a steel plate.   Got a game of experience in on this one and know it's a tough opponent.  I plan on winning this time and sitting the afternoon game out.

Been a long week or so.  Thanks for reading and allowing me to shed a little fun on the situation.  Feel free to pass on to others (survivors) to hopefully get them to smile.

Praying the radiation treatments provide back pain relief.  I am not a fan of watching my wife and son spread mulch. For first timers, they did well.  😀

As you can see cancer is not for the faint of heart.  It is recommended you don't try this on your own.  If you do, please, please get professional guidance.

God Bless you all!

Scott
