Journal

The sixth was another very peaceful day. I headed over to the hospital before Nick. When I got there, I spoke with our doctor. I told her that we have thought about it and talked about Rowan. We knew there was nothing to be done for Rowan medically. His kidneys were deteriorating and his lungs were weak. Nick and I had decided we would like to take Rowan and Lilly up to the garden on the 8th floor on Monday. We knew he was suffering, and that Rowan was ready to go. We decided that we would have the doctor extubate him in the garden so he can experience the wonders of the outdoors and then let nature take its course.

Ranae and Ashton visited us on Sunday. They held Rowan’s hands and showered him with love. Ranae even got to put lotion on Rowan. He loved her massaging it into his head.

We put Lilly in the isolette with Rowan again. They loved being together. When we put Lilly in the isolette she rolled towards him. When we straightened her out, she rolled back towards him, so we let her stay like that. She put her little hand on his and held it there. She was leaned into him almost like she was whispering to him, telling secrets. However, being the good big sister Lilly is she licked Rowan’s shoulder. It must have not tasted very good because she didn’t do it again. We did have to keep an eye on Lilly’s hands because she likes to grab things and would grab at Rowan’s breathing tube.

That evening we had to move back into D room. While we were in D room, Nick, Carol, my mom, and I all spent time holding Rowan.  Rowan knew how much he was loved, and how many people loved him. He was read to that night, many stories. I was the last one to hold him that night. I held him for about 2 hours before I had his nurse get him put back in his isolette.
