On Thursday, October 4, 2018, I went into Sanford for my routine annual mammogram. The next day I received a call saying I needed to come back in for more imaging. A couple of years ago I had been called back in for a second check on the left breast which turned out to be nothing. I expected this call back to be just as uneventful. Tuesday, October 9, I walked down that long hallway to an ultrasound room which was my first red flag as last time they only needed to do additional mammogram to rule out their concern. The ultrasound technician and I talked about our kids but I knew something was not right as she also directed her interest from the breast to the lymph nodes in my arm pit all the while taking measurements as she talked. She brought in the radiologist who explained to me the areas of concern stating it definitely needed a biopsy to determine why there was such a significant change from last year's mammogram image. Fortunately, they fit me in and completed the biopsy taking tissue sample from my right breast and lymph nodes the same day. I left with an overwhelming feeling of dread and fear. I waited for two excruciatingly long days before the radiologist called to tell me I have Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.

A Sanford Nurse Navigator called to schedule my first appointments at Roger Maris Cancer Center on Thursday, October 18, 2018. I had to wait a whole week to get answers.

Journal entry by Sara Rossow

Yesterday marked a significant milestone for this journey!  One year ago yesterday I rang the bell at Roger Maris having completed 5 months of chemo!  Odd to think it’s only one year as so much has happened in this one year!!  We celebrated with a margarita while we enjoyed the sun in AZ.  We are here in Mesa with Scott’s parents.  Scott and I head home today to work from home. The kids are staying for awhile.  They can do their classes and homework online and they won’t have any reason to leave and visit friends.  It’s difficult to get them to understand they need to stay home when they get back to ND!  What a crazy time this is for everyone and we hope you are all managing well and staying healthy!
