Journal entry by Sara Kim Weinberger —
Today was supposed to be my last chemo treatment. However, my white blood cell count was too low and I also haven’t been eating solid foods for 2 weeks. The last meal I had was after my last chemo on April 15th. I have no energy to receive treatment. I have been drinking lots of water and Ensure nutrition drinks.
I met with my doctor today and he checked my rash and we made a new plan going forward. The rash is gone from my face but I still have it on my hands, feet, lower legs and backs of elbows. It is drying out and doesn’t hurt anymore. Although he cancelled my chemo last Monday, he still wants me to go forward with my last one. So next Wednesday, May 8th will be my last chemo!!! I will receive the immunotherapy drug Keytruda and the chemo drug, Taxol. This drug usually only makes me feel tired, so let’s hope it will be an easy one this time around!
Getting immunotherapy next week means I will have one less on the other end. He wants me to continue to get it every 3 weeks after chemo. So now, after returning to Korea I will only need 5 treatments instead of 6. That will mean I will be done by end of October with the immunotherapy (by my calculations anyway 😅).
This week’s win is that my taste buds are slowly but surely regenerating and coming back. Today I was able to eat one egg, scrambled by Lauren 💗. It wasn’t terrible and I am beginning to to taste a little bit again! I am hopeful that by the end of the week things will be even better.
I have learned a lot from these last couple of weeks.
1. Nothing lasts forever, it’s just for now.
2. Change is the only thing that is certain.
3. I only have control over my own choices and my attitude about what’s happening to me.
4. Be patient with myself and my body and trust that it will eventually heal itself.
It’s been a very difficult, and there are times when I feel defeated but I don’t sit in those moments too long. I heal with all of many ways people have shown me love and support. Thank you!! 💗💗💗🥹🥹🥹
