Sarah ’s Story

Site created on October 25, 2018

On Sunday, October 21, 2018, upon getting out of bed at her home in New Orleans, Sarah collapsed in a full cardiac arrest.  Her husband, Garth, began resuscitation efforts  and called 911.  Sarah was in asystole upon arrival to the ER  where life saving efforts continued.  She has not fully awakened and remains in the ICU at Touro where her team of doctors continue to monitor brain function, signs of  progress  and look for a cause of sudden cardiac arrest.

If it's been said once to us, it has been said 100 times since Sunday: Anoxic brain injuries require time before a prognosis can be made and for now we are riding the recovery trajectory with a fighting spirit.   While we wait, we ask for your prayers for Sarah. We are determined to seek and advocate for  the most aggressive treatment for Sarah to achieve the best prognosis possible.

Our family is fortunate to be supported  by so many loving friends and family  who continue  to offer prayer and words of encouragement.  Our strength and faith would be diminished without this outpouring of abundant love.  I've tried to keep everyone updated via texts to this point but as the list of those concerned continues to grow, Garth and I have decided it best to migrate to Caring Bridge so that we can keep friends updated in one place.

Thank you to all of those who have inquired about services for our Sarah.  Sarah and Garth lived in New Orleans for over 20 years, longer than either lived in any other city.  New Orleans truly is their home and it seemed only fitting to us that her life should be celebrated there.

Services to celebrate Sarah’s life will take place on Saturday, November 17th at 12:15 p.m. at JACOB SCHOEN & SON, 3827 Canal Street, with Sarah's cousin, Rev. J.J. Whitney officiating.  Prior to the service friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Sarah's memorial tribute can be viewed on the Schoen and Son Funeral Home and Freeman Mortuary websites and will be posted in the Wednesday edition of The Advocate, The Times-Picayune and the Jefferson City News Tribune.
