Sarah’s Story

Site created on September 1, 2021

This is Nate, Sarah's husband kicking off Sarah's cancer journey.  We are absolutely floored with the abundance of support, texts, emails, prayers, etc. that we have received since Sarah's diagnosis.  I am going to turn over this site to Sarah to provide 1st hand updates with her treatment, but I wanted to squeeze in a most sincere THANK YOU to all of you who have been part of this with us.

For those of you that know Sarah, she is the most driven, passionate, selfless and focused people I have ever known.  For the better part of the past 7+ years, Sarah gracefully applies that energy to our 4 beautiful children, Zachary (7), Xander (5), Trey (3) and Brooklyn (1).  Sarah was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in August of 2021.

While the news was (and frankly still is) devastating, we continue to have faith that God has a plan and we both just need to be ready to continue on the path that he has laid out for us.  In the meantime, without a doubt I know that Sarah will ensure that cancer will not be what defines her as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend.  We thank God every day for the chance to enjoy what God has blessed us with to this point in our lives.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Nathan Cotter

Good morning,

It is just occurring to me that I missed an update last go around, but you didn't miss all that much, so I will use this post to bring you up to speed dating back to late January.

In an effort to not bury the lead, I am thrilled to share that Sarah's CT and Bone scans came back "stable".  For those that have been following from the beginning, stable is the name of the game right now, so we are grateful for another data point suggesting that the treatment plan is effective.  Sarah had a stretch between my last update and now where she was having pretty constant headaches in the same spot for almost 2 weeks.  While that eventually subsided, you can probably guess that her mind goes in a million places as to what might be the culprit of the pain.  She was actually slated to go in for an MRI last Friday, but the paid had subsided and her oncology team decided that it wasn't concerning enough to go through with it.  Halleluiah and Praise God. Other than that, treatment will continue as they have done it.  Sarah continues to press forward with her other than Mayo treatments regime that she has largely done since the beginning. Whatever it is that is working (even if just the prayer), we will take it and be grateful.

The kids all are coming fresh off of some combination of influenza B/strep, so that has been a bit of a gong show.  It's been a few weeks of rollercoasters off and on again fevers, coughs, being exhausted, not being able to eat, not sleeping well, etc.  Today was the first day we have sent all 3 boys to school on the same day in over a week.  Obviously not that fun, but it has forced us to slow down a bit, and we are hoping we are on the other end now with no fevers from them for more than 24 hours.  Sarah seems to be coming down with it finally, and I assume my hour is coming too, but for now we are grateful for the kids being back on the other end.

On the "life" front, the last few months have been eventful as things seem to be in general.  I got to go on my annual golf trip down to AZ with my friend/co-worker Dan.  We play 36 holes for 4 straight days, and this year we got 75 degrees and sunny every day.  I don't know what heaven is actually like, but that trip has to be pretty close.

Sarah continues to be quite involved at the kid's school and with various groups at church whether it be bible study or volunteering for different events the church/school hosts.

While I was gone, Sarah and the kids went to the Toby Mac concert.  For those unfamiliar with him, he is about as big as they come in the Christian music scene.  He was actually part of a group that I followed in my younger days called DC Talk that my uncle Doug would take me to concerts for having worked for the Christian radio station for many years (at the time called Spirit 95.9).  The kids know every word to about a dozen of his songs and sing their hearts out to it in the car often.  They had a blast.

Zach had his first legitimate school project in which he had to do a project on a president (assigned at random) and he got Lyndon B. Johnson.  He had to do a poster board, remember a 30 second speech about his life and recite that in front of all the parents/teachers/schoolmates for the wax museum project.  It was a grind to get through that project, but he had a lot of fun with it.  He is also wrapping up basketball this coming weekend and it's been a blast helping coach and watch the kids get better.  They still have so long to go, but they've all made some incredible strides. We will get a few weeks of relief from sports (aside from the golf program Zach is in 1x a week), and then baseball starts up for all 3 boys.

Xander continues to learn piano.  One of our neighbors does piano lessons and Xander loves it.  He is now starting to be able to play songs with both hands, which is pretty incredible.  I have zero musical ability, so it is cool to see your kid excel at something that I am incapable of doing. He is loving school at Holy Name, and is getting great test scores for all of his subjects.

Trey is always just happy to be part of the crew.  We celebrated his 6th birthday at the beginning of March, and he is excited for baseball to start to goof around with his school buddies outside of school.  We seemingly have avoided the principals office for a little bit now after some early school year run ins with Trey letting fun/shenanigans get in the way of obeying the rules.  Like Zach/Xander, Trey is excelling in school and loves to learn.  Despite his goof ball demeanor, he is extremely smart and his teacher has already noted that he has an engineering mind.  Obviously he gets that from his mother, the brains of the operation.

Brooklyn is her usual self.  Cute and sweet as can be, and simultaneously controlling our universe. She hasn't really gotten into activities yet, but she will get there.  She is our one home body kid, so she is just content messing up our house and leaving a trail
of dresses, socks and hair binders anywhere she goes.

Thanks all for your continued prayers and support.
