Journal entry by Angie Charboneau-Folch

On Wednesday Missy had "stage 2" of her breast reconstruction.  Everything was going well until about 8:00 pm last night.  We noticed after removing the ace bandage that her left breast was red along her incision.  This is the same side that she developed an infection in August.  We waited about 30 mins to see if the redness would go away, thinking maybe it was from the wrap.  But it didn't, so we called the doctor's office and spoke to their nurse.  She paged the on-call doctor who then put in a prescription for Missy for a strong antibiotic.  After searching for awhile, and calling our good friend Gretchen, we found that the Walgreens in Coon Rapids' has a 24-hour pharmacy.  So at 10:00 pm last night, I drove and got Missy her meds.  Took about an hour to drive there and back, but at least we got Missy started on meds last night and not having to wait until today.  We went in this morning to see the PA that assists Dr. Luong (the dr was in surgery).  She agreed that it looks like Missy may have an infection starting.  The PA consulted with Dr. Luong, and she put Missy on an additional second antibiotic.  The silver lining I guess is that they didn't hospitalize her again, like last time.  But good Lord, can't she catch a break.  We are suppose to monitor and if it gets worse, call again.  Otherwise follow up on Monday.  Missy is very black-n-blue in her front and under her armpits area.  She is very sore and a bit edgy to be expected.  Today she slept a lot and her pal, and running partner, Kelly dropped off a batch of homemade chicken wild rice soup.  Thanks Kelly!!

I have to say my wife is a beast.  The strength to care for her sister in her final month of life, and then to care for her mom in the same way.  All while knowing she too has this gene to potential put her on the same path.  The courage to proceed to fight cancer from happening to her with not one, but two, preventative surgeries.  There is nothing easy about all the choices she has made.  The physical scars that will be left behind are nothing compared to the emotional ones this disease has left.  But she decided cancer will not have her too...so she keep going.  Like I said, my wife is a beast!
