Kristen’s Story

Thank you for supporting and following our journey with Samuel’s heart diagnosis. We will post here for updates when we can! Please join us in praying for a miraculous healing and recovery for our baby boy.

Samuel was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Arteries during a routine anatomy scan. We are so thankful for the amazing sonographer at Women4Women who detected this abnormality. This particular heart defect is not always looked for or noticed on routine ultrasounds. Having a prenatal diagnosis allowed us to have a plan in place to give Samuel the best start in life.

We have chosen to deliver at Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville and absolutely love the pediatric cardiac team that will be taking care of Samuel. The anticipated order of events include an immediate NICU stay, possible balloon septostomy on the first day of life, open heart surgery on day 4 or 5 to switch the arteries, cardiac ICU recovery, and then transfer to the cardiac floor as Samuel learns to eat, breathe, and grow before discharge.

Journal entry by Kristen Gibson

Today was a great day! Samuel is now on a regular nasal cannula instead of Vapotherm. He was able to get rid of his arterial line, Lasiks, and chest tube! John spent the day with him and got to hold him twice. Tomorrow they have talked about introducing him to a bottle. So far he has tolerated tube feedings of breast milk really well and they’ve been increasing it every 6 hours.  He moved into a different pod in the ICU that is less intense than where he was. They have talked about moving him into the step down are tomorrow if he continues to do well tonight. We are so happy with all of his progress! Today he wore a shirt for the first time and the nurses just loved him!
