Samson’s Story

Site created on March 9, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website for Samson Petersen. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On January 6, 2020, Samson Robert was born to Glenn and Callie (Youngquist) Petersen at Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury, MN.  He weighed 7 lbs. 11 oz. at birth and was diagnosed with Down Syndrome and a significant heart defect, the Atrioventricular (A/V) Canal, which will require open heart surgery to repair.   Sammy and his Mama were transferred to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital on 01/07/20, 24 hours after birth, based on his echocardiogram results.  Sammy spent the first four weeks of his life in the NICU for respiratory support, hypoglycemia, and feeding difficulties.  We are so happy he is home until surgery!

Sammy is a sweet, content and snuggly baby who has captured the love of his parents, grandparents, great grandparents, as well as, his big brother Luke (5) & big sister Lottie (3).  As we all struggle to manage during this uncertain time with the COVID-19 virus looming, surgery is still scheduled for April 6th at the U of M Masonic Children's Hospital just as Sam turns 12 weeks old.  While elective and non-time sensitive surgeries are being postponed to make room for a possible surge in patients, Sammy's doctors believe it is in his best interest to complete the surgery soon.  He will be at Masonic Children's for as long as it takes to recover and will only be able to have one parent visit at a time.  Grandparents will take good care of Luke and Lottie while Mommy and Daddy are away.  In the meantime, we are doing everything we can to keep Sammy and his family as healthy as possible as to not delay surgery.

Journal entry by Callie Petersen

Sammy had surgery on Tuesday, August 4th to place a g-tube in his stomach and a circumcision.  He did great!  He has spent two nights in the hospital and will likely come home today once they are sure he is tolerating his feeds through the g-tube.  We are so happy to be done with the ng tube in his nose and hopefully our last surgery for a while!  Thank you for all of the prayers and well wishes.
