Sam’s Story

Site created on March 18, 2019

Hello All!  We are using this site to keep family and friends updated on Sam!
What's the backstory?  On March 9, Sam, Audrey and Tom went skiing at Angel Fire and during the last run of the day, Sam went over a jump, fell, and broke his leg.    Angel Fire EMTs did an X-ray to confirm the break and reported that something looked strange and said he should go to an Osteopathic MD ASAP.  On Monday  3/11,   the MD reported that Sam had a mass, which essentially, caused the break and Sam needed to have an MRI.   The MRI confirmed that Sam has cancer and he was immediately admitted to Presbyterian Pediatric ICU on Thursday 3/14.
Sam went through a barrage of tests throughout the weekend and Sam, Pam and Tom rode the roller coaster of "hell" over the weekend  as the Drs. knew that the cancer had spread but they were still unsure of it's pathology and they were not going to get the full diagnosis and test results until Tuesday 3/19.  It was a 5 day  nightmare for all!
Tuesday 3/19 the full diagnosis came and it ended up being much better than originally thought.  His bone marrow and spinal fluid is clean and Sam has Lymphoma B Cell - Stage 3.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kelly Steingreaber

There's been great news!   Sam had a PET scan two weeks ago and it came back with NO ACTIVE CANCER cells!  He will only have to have 1 more round of chemotherapy to complete his treatment.  His blood cell counts were evaluated (last week and again this week) and both weeks' tests results showed that his counts were too low (neutropenia) to continue treatment.  He will be evaluated again on Monday to determine if his counts are high enough (meaning his risk of infection is lowered) to begin his last week of chemotherapy!  Minor setback but thoughts and prayers for an increase in his counts.
