Journal entry by Shannon Frederickson

Wow!! It's hard to believe it's only been 7 months since Sammie walked out of the hospital after what has definitely been one of the scariest months of our lives. Sammie's progess was amazing in just the first month home. As of now her skin is so close to completely healed. She has no scarring and only a small amount of pigmentation differences in the areas that were affected the worst (stomach and lower back). She has noticed that the level of humidity affects how her skin feels. Drier air is better!! She had an appointment with her dermatologist in October and he said she is healing so well that she can go 6 months before her next check up!! Still using sunscreen daily (as we all should) and careful to avoid direct sun during its peak times.  Sammie's biggest struggle is her eyes. They are pretty dry; she uses artificial tears every 60-90 minutes during the day, nighttime eye ointment at bedtime and drops every 3 or so hours throughout the night. She is still on 2 different prescription drops twice a day. She has done a wonderful job learning to pluck out the eye lashes that grow on the inside of her eye lids, sometimes 10 eyelashes at a time! She also wears bandage contact lenses. They are contacts without any added vision aid, just there to protect her eyeballs from the eyelashes growing inside and the scar tissue. Thankfully her vision was not affected!!
She was so excited to start back to school this fall as a senior! She attends high school each morning for band class and then comes home to spend the rest of her day with her homeschooling studies. Another thing that has been exciting is to see how fast her hair is growing! So thick and beautifully healthy 😍.
We are still so grateful to each and every one of you who cared for Sammie and her family along the way❤️
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
