Samuel’s Story

Site created on June 2, 2018

Hi, welcome to our caringbridge site to share information about Sam's surgery to become at ironman. We found out that Sam would need posterior spinal fusion surgery in October of last year, due to a diagnosis of Scheuermann's Kyphosis.  After months of physical therapy, we were referred to Dr. Tuten at Tuckahoe Orthopedics that confirmed that Sam's only choice for correction of his spine and daily significant chronic back pain was surgery.  June 6th was selected to get Sam through most of his academic year with the hope that he will be recovered enough to participate in band camp the first of August and return to school in September as a Junior.  Our family has already been touched by so many phone calls, offers for prayer and well wishes for Sam's healing and recovery.  We plan to keep this site updated for the next couple of weeks to share his progress and journey to get Sam straight (pun intended:). Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for caring for our Sam and for your prayers these next few weeks.

Hi, it’s been two weeks since Sam’s surgery and we are glad to report that his followup appointment today with Dr. Tuten went well! Other than some accumulated fluid at the distal end of his wound, everything looks great both inside (see attached X-rays) and out. Hopefully, the fluid will reabsorb on it’s own in time. Sam’s mobility is improving daily and we are now walking 30 minutes twice a day. I think it’s taking him some time to get used to a new center of gravity. Post surgery, Sam is 2 inches taller and is now 6’2”! He still has a fair amount of pain, but that is also improving daily. He also still has a long way to go functionally, but Dr Tuten feels he will be well enough to start band camp in August. I was so happy when he played his trumpet for the first time a couple of days ago. So many thanks to all of his friends that have come to visit, play video games and join him on walks (please keep coming) and to all our family and friends that has provided so much support to our family these last couple of weeks. We have felt all the love and prayers and it has made all the difference. We are so blessed! ❤️
