Samantha’s Story

Site created on February 20, 2019

Samantha was diagnosed with breast cancer (invasive ductal carcinoma) on 2/15/19.   3 lumps that were found, 2 were biopsied and tested positive for cancer.   She had her first appointment of many today.  She met with a surgeon at Regions who was absolutely wonderful!  She had so much information thrown at her at this appointment and remained strong through it all.   Right now we don't know too much. What we do know is the cancer is estrogen and progesterone receptor positive which means the cancer would respond to hormone therapy later in treatment. This is a good thing!  We are still waiting to here the results of the HER 2 test which will be back in about a week. If this test is positive then Sam would have to go through chemo prior to surgery. If it is negative then surgery will be first and this surgery would be a double mastectomy.   If further treatment is needed we would not know until after this surgery.   The cancer has not been staged yet.  We won't know until surgery when they remove some lymph nodes for testing. We do know she caught it early!!  Tomorrow Sam has an appt with a genetic counselor.  On Monday she will have a breast MRI .  This will give the doc more info on the spacing between her tumors and also check for additional cancers in both breasts that may not have been caught on the mammogram or ultrasound.   Thursday she will meet with a plastic surgeon.  By this appt we should have more information on what path Sam will have to take.   This is just the start of kicking cancers ass!  Please say a prayer for our family.  We will update this page as we find out more information.

Journal entry by Randi and Pat Forliti

Sam had another lump in her breast develop recently.  Yesterday she had a biopsy and today that lump also came back cancerous.  They are currently running test to see if it is the same type of cancer as her other 3 lumps.  We do not know anything right now other than that.  Not sure if they will take her off her current treatment and start a whole new more aggressive treatment or not.  This is just one more hurdle she has to jump over.  She is still remaining strong even though it is difficult to right now.  Please say prayers for Sam today!  We will update this page when we find out more.
