Journal entry by Amber Baerg —
Hi everyone. This is not the update we hoped to share, but want to get some updates out to everyone so Wendy and Sam's family can process the news and not get too inundated with questions. The family photo in this post is just from last December. Samantha was doing very well and was able to spend about a week at home before going back to the group home. Unfortunately since then, the VHL has progressed very quickly and the outlook is not good. The other two photos are more recent photos and her current condition.
Sam currently has an inoperable tumor in her brain, as well as a cyst on her brain stem which has caused her to lose most of the function she had regained. She is really only able to move her head and her left arm a little. Sam is in the hospital right now and because of Covid she can't have any visitors besides Wendy. Once she is out of the hospital, she will go back to the group home and doctors say that as the cyst progresses, she will eventually just go to sleep and not wake up.
We are all so saddened by this news and it is very fresh, especially for Wendy, Gus, and Samantha's siblings. Please keep Sam's family and friends in your prayers. If you'd like to send a card to Samantha, send it to Wendy and Gus' home and Wendy will bring cards down while she is able to visit Sam at the hospital.
A $30 donation to CaringBridge powers Samantha's site for one month. Will you make a gift to help ensure that this site stays online for them and for you?
