Samantha’s Story

Site created on October 18, 2023

Welcome to my caring bridge! This journey began when my liver lab work was not what it should have been. They did testing and imaging and originally diagnosed me with PSC of the liver. In August I started to have back pain and thought I had just tweaked my back and hip. Then in later September I noticed my skin turning yellow. Went to urgent care not feeling well. They ran some tests and images and figured out I had a bile duct obstruction.  After more testing they found a mass on my liver 6cm. The location and size make it inoperable. I had an ERCP done to put in a stent but it was not successful at draining the bile. We drove to Mayo the 17th and walked into the ER due to increased symptoms. They got me a room right away and started testing with a CT, ultra sound and labs!

Journal entry by Samantha Kling

We have been so busy with appointments and treatment! Since being diagnosed I have had 6 chemo treatments and my last scan showed some shrinkage in most of the tumors and possibly some new areas of concern. Overall it is going well.

Chemo is going great and I have not had many side effects besides fatigue and some body soreness. I had a consult with the GI team at Mayo and a pouchoscopy to address some GI issues that have arose from chemo. I currently am tapering prednisone to cure my pouch flare from chemo.

I met with the team at the university of Nebraska to see there thoughts on the treatment plan I am currently on. They think that the first line of treatment would have been the same but wanted me to take urisodol still to slow down the bile duct disease (PSC) that they originally diagnosed me with before cancer.

I had my stints replaced mid December at Mayo and will go back to have them replaced in March at the 12 wk mark again. This will continue indefinitely to keep from getting jaundiced again.

I go back to Mayo  for a rescan CT of my liver on Feb 5th to see how things are progressing and we pray the tumors all continue to shrink. We talked mid December with oncology about possible resection but the tumor board has turned me down due to my whole liver having tumors all over in it and replacement is also off the table at Mayo.

We r currently researching where to go to get another opinion to make sure we keep on top of the cancer and keep it shrinking. We r thinking maybe the cancer center in Houston but there are tons of options.
