Ryland’s Story

Site created on May 28, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Ryland Jo Mickens blessed us by entering the world at 28 weeks on Monday, May 25th. Mom got diagnosed with severe preeclampsia on Thursday, May 21st and after days spent with highs and lows- Ryland made her debut. She was born at 12:30pm at 2 lb, 7 oz and 14.3 inches long.

Ryland is now a resident rock star in the NICU at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. We hope this site can allow for the many people who love her and her family to follow along on the journey of our little prizefighter!

Journal entry by Macae Mickens

Hey #teamryjo -

We were forewarned that NICU life can be one step forward and two steps back. Thankfully, Ryland has been such a trooper during her stay and we haven’t had to encounter that much.

Overnight, Ryland had a series of desats (oxygen drops). Her head circumference measurements also hadn’t increased since last week. These two things were showing the care team that Ryland needs to be monitored for the desat and the weight gain for another day. Although mommy and daddy were heartbroken, we feel much better after a nap.

Since rounds this morning, Ryland has had two sets of Brady spells (drop in heart rate). Because of these, combined with last nights desats, Ryland is back on a 3-5 day spell watch. We are grateful to be in the right place for her to be monitored and are hoping for continued rest for mommy and daddy the next few days. We are also relieved that we didn’t go home and then have to be readmitted.

Ryland is a trooper and we will continue to stay strong for her! Please continue to include her in your prayers for no more spells, some good weight gain, and... this is silly... but a good 💩!

With love,
Macae and Michael

Ps- enjoy the bath pics
