Russ’s Story

Site created on September 14, 2015

In the early morning hours of September 12th Russ (my dad) woke up with numbness in his left arm and the inability to move his hand. He called 911 right away and was taken to Ridgeview Hospital in Waconia where he was evaluated and sent to Abbott Northwestern in Minneapolis. He was given the clot busting drug TPA and appeared to be doing quite well later that morning when my mom and I arrived. He had full use of his left side and cognitively he was fully in tact (flirting with the nurses and all). They did evaluations every 15 minutes to an hour for 24 hours and he had passed them all with flying colors. The doctors almost released him to go home except his blood pressure was still all over the place and they wanted that stabilized before being released. They did move him out of the ICU and into a normal room Sunday afternoon. We all visited him Sunday evening and left with plans to pick him up in the morning. After we left he started to have some symptoms again, numbness in his left side. Sometime early on Monday morning he suffered another, more severe stroke. He is currently paralyzed on his left side, and has slurred speech from the paralysis but cognitively he's fully in tact. The first thing he asked me when I saw him Monday morning was "What's the stock market doing?" :)

Thank you so much for all your support. It means the world to dad and to all of us. Love, Cheri, Julie and Jon

Journal entry by Julia Fischer-Roaldson

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost two weeks since my dad passed away. The outpouring of support from people near and far has been amazing and something my family and I won’t ever forget. I want to say thank you one final time for following my dad’s journey and for all the thoughts, prayers, stories, and memories over the past two and half years. Here is his obituary, which I think gives a nice glimpse into his life.
