Roy’s Story

Site created on November 4, 2022

Roy has battled low grade, noninvasive bladder cancer since 2006.  It moved to his left kidney last year but was still considered low grade.  As he was being treated for his kidney cancer this summer, doctors saw some indications that the cancer had become high grade and did a full body scan.  They found spots in his lung, liver and lymph nodes in October.  A biopsy was done and this confirmed that the spots were metastasized urothelial carcinoma.  He was told that if he did nothing he would have about 6 months .  If he opted to do immunotherapy that might be extended to between 9-12 months,  These are statistical estimates and have no guarantees.  He was told there is no cure.  He began treatments this week and we thought a Caring Bridge site would be the perfect way to keep people in the loop.  Check back here to follow Roy's progress and leave encouraging notes and prayers.

Journal entry by Rebecca Dennis-Johnson

Hello All,
Dad had a scan on Tuesday to gauge the effectiveness of the Keytruda treatments and then met the doctor yesterday to get his results.  It was all good news!  The spots on his liver and lung were unchanged and the cancer on his lymph node decreased in size.  The doctor said these were excellent results.  Dad will continue with Keytruda treatments over the next 3 months and then have another scan.  The doctor called the treatment effects “durable,” meaning the Keytruda is likely to keep working for him.  However, Dad’s cancer is highly aggressive and this is not a cure.  The goal is a higher quality of life and more time.

It was a great way to start the weekend!  Thanks for all your prayers and support.  I know he really appreciates it!
