Newest Update

Journal entry by Michelle Landers

On Thursday we went and seen her cancer doctor. Per the doctor the immunotherapy is what is causing my mother to have rash and dry skin.  They stated that once the immunotherapy is out of her system that all should clear up. Mom will also be on thyroid medication from now on.  The cancer treatments have caused issues with your thyroid. The type mom has been diagnosed with is Hypothyroidism (a common condition where the thyroid doesn't create and release enough thyroid hormone into your bloodstream. This makes your metabolism slow down. Also called underactive thyroid, hypothyroidism can make you feel tired, gain weight and be unable to tolerate cold temperatures).

The new type of chemo treatment mom will be receiving is called Lurbinectedin. Per the doctor mom's immune system will become weak. With that being said mom will have to be careful when being around other people. She will have to wear a mask because the slightest cold can make her real sick.  The other things that we will have to watch for while on this treatment is a fever, blood sugars, bone marrow, albumin, electrolyte changes, and liver function.

I asked the doctor with this type of chemo; will she need to be moving in with me sooner than later.  After speaking with the doctor, I found out that a high percentage of people can take care of themselves while receiving this type of chemo.  They feel mom will do well with this type of chemo.  Mom asked if she would lose her hair again, they believe she will not.

Mom received her first treatment Thursday.  Next week she will be going back to have her white blood cells checked and then we will go from there.  Mom did wake up this morning and felt a little nauseous but recovered fairly quickly.  She slept last night from 8pm to 8am and that is out of the norm for her.  Being tired as we all know is one of the major side effects from chemo. Mom has her chemo treatment every 21 days, so I will keep you updated as we move along.

I want to thank you everyone for their thoughts and prayers.  Please keep praying for my mother!
