Rose’s Story

Site created on December 3, 2023

Mom went into the doctor in Sioux Falls on Thursday for a sinus infection. While she was there, her blood pressure was low which caused concern. Dr. Skliris then heard what he thought was a heart murmur and wanted her to get into a cardiologist. Thank the Lord, she was able to get into the cardiologist in Sioux Falls the very next day. She had an ultrasound done and they saw immediate concern, so the doctor assessed the situation right away. After the doctor checked the ultrasound, she was taken to the emergency room. She was diagnosed with aortic dissection and life-flighted to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where they had the surgical team ready and waiting.  The first wall of her aortic valve was torn from her heart to her stomach.  Due to the tear, the second wall of the aortic valve was holding pressure of about 48 mm in width. At any moment, the total aortic valve could've ruptured and been fatal. By the grace of God, they caught it just in time and began surgery at Mayo Clinic at 11:11pm. She was in surgery for 9 hours and is now in the ICU.

Our family is very appreciative of everyone's thoughts and prayers. Please use this website for updates moving forward. We will have them available once we get any updates.

Also, for those donating to the tribute page we would just like you to know it only goes to Caring Bridge to keep their site going.  As a family, we are not asking for money but just would like you to know if you are trying to give that as a gift we will not receive it.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Maddison Brown

Mom had a busy day of appointments! First she met with Dr. Skliris and everything looked good he said. Her INR was at a 2.4 (Ideally healthy people have an INR of 1.1 or below) This just means her blood is thinner and takes longer to clot. She takes a blood thinner medication and will be on it for the rest of her life most likely.

She worked really hard during her therapy assessments. They went well and she will begin outpatient therapy on Wednesday. She will go 3 days a week. We pray she will continue to rock therapy and continue to get good rest as her body heals as well.
