Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. In October 2015, Roland Geiser was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment. In February 2017, his diagnosis was changed to Lewy Body Dementia. (For more information on Lewy Body Dementia please visit this site
https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/what-lewy-body-dementia.) In May 2017, Roland was also diagnosed with prostate cancer. We decided not to treat the cancer because the side effects of treatment would have negatively impacted his quality of life. Although his level of functioning gradually declined, it was a blessing for him to continue working part-time at Prengers Inc. and to help teach his Sunday school class until early March 2020 when the Covid pandemic hit. As Karen assumed more transportation, household, and caregiving duties, she reluctantly relinquished her teaching responsibilities in September 2019. We moved to OrrVilla in May 2020 as these two conditions continued to attack Roland’s body and we saw a more significant decline in his ability to complete daily living activities and to communicate clearly. As is common with LBD, he also experiences hallucinations and delusions and his sleep is interrupted. In May 2020, we also started partnering with hospice and other home health care services because of the increased need for assistance. These caregivers have been a blessing for our family. Through Roland’s strong faith and personal testimony he is still touching the lives of those around him. One caregiver has devotions and prayer with Roland, and this has led to a time of spiritual growth and encouragement for both of them. We are so blessed that our daughter, Sarah, chose to move back to the area in 2017 to spend quality time with her dad and partner with her mother as we journey with Lewy. As Roland’s health declines, Sarah has been wonderfully supportive. She fills in for caregivers, processes with Karen and spends many nights with us so Roland can remain in our home.
