Roger’s Story

Site created on July 9, 2018

Family and friends, thank you for visiting our site.  We’re humbled by your prayers, support, encouragement, and love and can’t fully express how grateful we are for your presence in our lives.

A new, unexpected chapter has dawned for our family and we trust the God who knows this road well to guide us, uphold us, and strengthen us along the way.  Ultimately, we trust in the goodness of God and desire that God’s fame will increase by the way we, together, walk this road. We celebrate the many ways in which the good news of God’s love for all made known to us in Jesus has been embodied in our dad’s (Roger) life.  We trust that in the beautiful, hard, and uncertain times that lie before us, our dad will continue to declare the very good story of God with his life, words, and love.

We’re not entirely sure what lies ahead…that story will unfold in the journal section of this site.  But here is the story of our dad’s cancer journey thus far.  We thought that we would share it so that all of you can be informed and know how you can pray more specifically.

After nearly six months of struggling with a nagging cough, a declining appetite, and weight loss without answers, our dad went into the hospital on July 4th.  He packed a bag with the intention of not leaving until he had an understanding and a pathway forward.  A couple of hours later, after a barrage of tests, my parents were notified of a softball size tumor in his liver that was likely malignant and suspicious spots as well as the presence of blood clots in his lungs.

For the next five days, we spent sacred time together as a family, oscillating between hope and realism, sharing good laughs, wondering about life and legacy, and holding on with faith that despite the outcome and way forward, “God is good.”

On July 9th, we received word that both the tumor and the spots on the lungs are, in fact, cancer. It seems to be an aggressive, silent form of cancer that has metastasized and left our dad physically weak.  His spirit is strong and your words of encouragement here, via text, or by email only strengthen his zeal to fight.

We’re thankful that God is in control and are scared at times, but we rest in the power and presence of a gracious God. Your prayers are truly invaluable.

With love and gratitude,
The Swigart Kids
