Robert’s Story

Site created on September 13, 2017

A Type 1 Diabetic for 30 years,  Bob discovered in early June  2017 that his kidneys were failing. He learned he would be facing the prospect of dialysis 3-4 times a week, on top of the daily blood glucose testing, carb counting and insulin injections. Jacque, Hope, Stacy and Bob attended a presentation from Kidney Smart where they learned about options for dialysis, how Bob could maintain his remaining kidney function with a healthy diet, and the possibility of transplant.

Sister Jacque stepped up to become his advocate, helping him navigate the healthcare system. She accompanied him to the vascular surgeon to learn about surgery to create a fistula for dialysis. At the same time, Bob met with his kidney doctor to discuss transplant. She agreed this was the ideal solution, and set up an appointment with the transplant team at UC San Francisco.

Meanwhile, sister Hope, always a proponent of organ donation, had been looking into the possibility of donating a kidney anonymously after hearing the story of a colleague. She had been researching and praying about it, confiding in a friend back in May that she felt God calling her to do this. Little did she know she was mentally preparing for a donation that might actually be for someone much closer - her brother.

Bob, along with Hope, Tori and Stacy traveled to UCSF to meet with the transplant team. It was encouraging and overwhelming at the same time. Bob continued with plans for dialysis, in case it was needed. His first surgery on his right forearm was unsuccessful, so back under the knife for surgery #2, this time on his left arm, above the elbow. This one was a success, and the incision has healed well. On the transplant front, both Hope and Bob had numerous tests and evaluations, culminating with another trip to UCSF, this time for Hope's evaluation with the transplant team.

On Thursday, November 9, we received the awesome news that Hope is a match to donate her kidney to Bob! All 10 genetic markers are identical. We are overjoyed at this news! The surgery date has not yet been set, but we are hoping it will happen before the end of the year.

The kidney transplant from living donor Hope is only step one towards Bob's healthy future. Once he recovers from transplant surgery, he will be able to join the list for a pancreas transplant, as well. What began as discouraging news - the prospect of a life tied down by dialysis - has turned into an incredible blessing and solution beyond our dreams. With a healthy kidney and a new pancreas, Bob will no longer be bound by dialysis for kidney failure or insulin for diabetes. Watch out world!

We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Stacy Wood

Hope is out of surgery and all went well. She will be in recovery for awhile before we can see her. Bob still in surgery and reports are good. He should be another hour or so.

We are so grateful for all the love, prayers and support. Everyone here at UCSF has been awesome.

It was an early morning ... we were here at the hospital at 530 am.
