Newest Update

Journal entry by Kristi Benson

Good morning!

Just wanted to give an update on dad now that he has almost been home one week.

It was so good to get dad home. The first couple of days were hard. I think everyone was just getting use to being in a "new" place. After dads stroke he relearned everything in the rehab. Now this week, he had to relearn everything in his house. For example, the bed is different at home, the bathroom, getting his wheelchair around the house. I am sure it felt so strange for him. Relief to be home, but also trying to figure out this new routine.

We feel so blessed to have found an amazing care team for dad. Shout out to Kara Welke, dads OT, and owner of Home Therapy Solutions. She has made this transition SO much easier for us. She has lined up all of all the therapy that dad needs. Right now, they are all coming out to the house to work with dad. It is an amazing relief for all of us. Kara is a power house of knowledge, and it feels amazing that I can call her directly and ask any questions I have. Sometimes, in the medical world, it can feel like no one is truly on your side. It can be scary and overwhelming. Kara and her team have completely changed that for us. For this, we are so thankful!

Dads left side is super strong, and that continues to help him in this journey. All his therapists say he is such a HARD worker. We know how much he wants to get better.

After a week at home, everyone is much more confident getting dad where he needs to be. Some good family friends of ours borrowed their golf cart to us. This has been great for dad. We can get him in the golf cart and go for little crop tours or just get outside and see what everyone is up too in the farm yard.
Yesterday, all the grandkids were there to see papa. We got all dads "toys" out and all the grandkids were driving them and finding all the mud they could. Mom, dad, and I followed behind in the golf cart to watch them. He really liked that.

I feel very blessed that my mom, my brothers, and I are a close family. It literally takes all of us to make this work. I say that with happiness in my heart. There was NEVER a time in our lives that my dad wouldn't stop what he was doing if it meant helping one of us. Now it is our turn to help him.

Thank you to everyone that has brought out a meal. That has been a huge blessing and we can never thank you enough.

Specific prayer requests:

Please continue to pray for good health and strength for our whole family.

Please pray for dad to be able to have great sleep at night. We can tell if dad doesn't get a good night sleep. His abilities to do his therapy well really relies on how well he is sleeping.

Please pray for continued patience for our family in this journey.

Please pray that dad can get his speech back.

Thank you all so much for the continued prayers! We need them and we appreciate them.

We thank God dad has come this far and continue to be amazed at His blessings.
