Rita’s Story

Site created on March 29, 2024

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
This story began in late February when Rita had shoulder replacement surgery.  Her recovery from this surgery covered up the abdominal discomfort that she was beginning to have.  After her shoulder began to heal, she realized that her abdominal distress was getting worse.  When she became weak, fatigued, and had a poor appetite, we made an appointment with her primary care physician, who did an exam and ordered blood work.  When the results came back we were advised to go to the emergency department at UNC Hospital.  Exams, CTs, and more blood work revealed that she had metastatic pancreatic cancer, which was confirmed by biopsy a few days later.  Surgery and radiation therapy were ruled out leaving chemotherapy as the only option.  Her treatments will begin on April 11.

I am grateful for all of you who sent cards to Rita and me.  These cards were extraordinarily sincere and moving. I never knew how important these symbols of love and friendship are, but these I will cherish forever.  Eric
