Riley’s Story

Site created on October 17, 2021

On October 12th, after a long month of blood work after blood work, 2 skin biopsies and a bone marrow biopsy our sweet little 3 month old baby girl was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. We were admitted to the pediatric oncology unit at John’s Hopkins on October 13th for the beginning of a 6 month long journey. On October 14th she went to the OR to have a central line placed for Chemotherapy and she had another bone marrow biopsy done at that time. On October 15th she officially began her chemo treatments. Her first round of treatment will consist of one chemotherapy drug every 12 hours for 10 days, another chemotherapy drug once on days 1, 3, and 5, another chemotherapy drug once on day 6 and on day 8 she will have a lumbar puncture to test for any leukemia in her spinal fluid and they also give a dose of chemo into her spinal fluid. We will then need to remain in the hospital for 3 weeks to monitor her closely. We will be able to take her home for a week but then will need to return for her next round of treatment. After her second round they Will do another bone marrow biopsy to determine if she is high or low risk which will determine the rest of her treatments.

Today is day 6 of 8 for Riley’s second round of chemo and so far she has been doing good! She did throw up once yesterday evening and I think the mucositis may be starting up again 😔 Her IgG (a type of antibody in your blood that is important in fighting bacterial and viral infections) levels were low so they gave her IVIg to help boost her levels. Her counts haven’t bottomed out yet but they have been continuously dropping. Last round it was around day 8 that her side effects started getting really bad so prayers her side effects aren’t nearly as bad this go around 🙏🏼  Her G-tube has been so much nicer and easier to manage than the NG tube so we are thankful that we decided to go forward with it.
