Goodbyes aren't forever. Yesterday and early this morning we said goodbye to our precious husband, father, Papa, brother and son Rick. His siblings were all able to make it here and be with him. Facetime was also helpful in connecting with those that weren't able to make the trip.

Upon further consultation with the entire family and Sanford Neurologists, doctors, nurses & staff, the decision was made to keep Rick comfortable. His condition was slowly declining with new issues further complicating his already difficult prognosis. We all agreed and knew that Rick would not want to be kept alive by machines. We decided to treasure the time he had left and keep him comfortable. We were even able to have a wedding ceremony for Caitlin & Brooks at his bedside in his room, so that he could be there (our thanks to uncle Pete for making this happen). The biggest shout out and recognition to the Sanford ICU nursing staff for setting up the room, making Rick look his best and even providing flowers and balloons for the ceremony. We all knew that he was aware and present for the ceremony, which meant a lot.

We all were able to spend valuable and precious time with him individually and in group settings. Again, a huge thank you to the Sanford ICU staff for bending the rules and accommodating all of us.

Rick went home to heaven around 3:15 this morning. We were all devastated with losing him, but triumphant that he was with Jesus. Just a few weeks ago toward the beginning of his medical issues, he and our mom had a conversation about faith and heaven. And Rick proudly proclaimed that "he was all good there." This brings us comfort & peace in this time of sorrow & heartache.

Even though Rick has passed from this earth, his life, legacy and everything that he taught us lives in each and every person who knew him.  His body and spirit may be gone, but we know that the memory of him will live on and through each of us that had the pleasure of knowing him.

We extend our deepest thanks to everyone that came alongside our family during this journey. Please know how much each and every text, call, social media message, meal, financial gift and prayer meant to us during this difficult time. We can't explain in enough words how much it meant to our family.

Goodbyes aren't forever. And we are comforted knowing that we will all see Rick's infectious smile again in heaven one day.

A funeral will be held on Monday, March 13th in Minot, North Dakota at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Brethren Church at 1:00pm.
