Rich’s Story

Site created on September 14, 2019

On August 22, 2016, Rich was diagnosed with a grade 2 astrocytoma brain tumor. In September 2016, he received an awake craniotomy at Mayo which resulted in approximately 75% of the tumor being removed. Rich completed chemo and radiation following the craniotomy. Regular MRIs have been done every three months, since this is a type of brain tumor that will return. Following the surgery, chemo, and radiation, Rich has experienced some short term memory loss, confusion,  and fatigue - but overall has done well - even returning to work part-time.

In late June 2019, we received the news that we had been dreading - the tumor was back, in a new location. In July 2019, Rich underwent a biopsy; this time, the brain tumor is a grade 3 astrocytoma. The tumor is inoperable due to its location. Rich began chemo in July. On September 4,  Rich experienced several large seizures that left him with weakness on his right side and difficulty speaking. He was admitted to Regions hospital where they shared that the chemo that Rich had been taking was not working; the swelling and fast growth of the tumor was causing the seizures. Through EEG monitoring, it was discovered that Rich was having 3-6 'silent' seizures per hour during those first two days in the hospital. The care team has adjusted Rich's medication and seem to now have the seizures under control. A port has been placed and Rich will receive a new form of chemo with hopes it will keep the swelling down and slow the growth rate of the tumor.
