Richard’s Story

Site created on January 8, 2019

Richard had an angiogram on Thursday, Jan. 3. The test revealed that he needs heart bypass surgery. The following day he was admitted to Swedish Hospital-Cherry Hill for observation pending surgery.  After the bypass (which we hope will happen yet this week) he will begin a rigorous and lengthy rehabilitation process. Richard is in good spirits and is feeling good.  Son Eric and daughter-in-law Kye are providing loving support and care.

As many of you know, Richard's wife, Susan Loitz, suffers from Alzheimer's Disease. Her memory loss has advanced to the point that she can no longer be home alone. Despite her condition, Susan is the person we have always known and loved. (Donald Trump continues to be her #1 topic of conversation.) Richard has been providing amazing care for her and his absence has complicated her routine.  Her siblings, Angie (Minnesota), Nancy (Illinois) and Steve (Ellensburg, WA) are visiting on a rotating basis until we are able to secure professional in-home care for both Susan and Richard post-surgery. Eric, Kye and neighbor Cynthia also serve as supportive members of Susan's care-giving team.

Richard and Susan both welcome phone calls and visits. If you are able to spend time with Susan, that would be particularly helpful to those who are providing her care.  If you would like to be added to a list of people who could be called upon to help fill a care-giving gap for a couple of hours, contact Nancy Loitz through this website or through Facebook Messenger. I will pass your information on to the rest of the team.

Journal entry by Angie Forsell

Susan and I just got back from the hospital.  Richard had a tough morning.........feeling pretty down and had no appetite.  His pain was well controlled, but the pain med was not a good fit overall, so that has been switched.  He continues to get very good care and is happy with all the staff.  He ate a banana while we visited and we encouraged him to order some Boost if he couldn't get his head into anything solid right now.  All his tubes are out except for the IV that will remain in place until he's discharged just in case it's needed.  His color was good and he has been walking at every opportunity.  He woke up at 1 AM and an aide walked with him even then!  He is getting lots of calls from his many friends and family.  The support has been great.
