Richard’s Story

Site created on January 7, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.
Please do not donate!  The Selph Family has this covered!

He is a fighter - and is surviving against all odds.  The medical team said he is a strong 81-year-old!  And, we know Rich - he definitely loves staying active and living his life to the fullest.  He always says he would rather die living his life to the fullest.  Ann/Mom is being very strong and courageous as she supports Rich!

Rich suffered severe trauma from a scooter accident.  He hit a construction hole in the road that had not been properly marked.  He was taken to the ER on 12-30-2020.   His blood pressure dropped due to internal bleeding so emergency surgery was required to stop the bleeding.   He lost his spleen and kidney during the first surgery, subsequent surgeries followed.  He had a collapsed lung and broke most of his ribs and his shoulder.

He is on dialysis, but hopefully, his kidney will start to function on its own as time passes.  He is on a ventilator to help him breathe and his heart was severely weakened by these events.   He does not appear to have any cognitive deficits - he is responding to our voices and able to localize and follow the nurse's commands to move his extremities.  He is still very ill - but he is moving in the right direction.

Journal entry by Elizabeth Selph

Hi All,

We have set up a memorial website for Richie / Dad / Captain.

Memorial Website for Richie Selph

In lieu of reaching out to Ann, please send your love and support by contributing to Dad's memorial page.  It is a work in progress, but we wanted to get it up and running.  Ann is handling Dad's passing with great sadness, poise, and courage!  She sends her love and gratitude to you all!

Much love Elizabeth
