Anthony’s Story

Site created on October 24, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge site for Anthony. We will be using it to keep family and friends updated and apprised of changes as Anthony’s journey toward healing progresses. Dee Dee and Anthony will be seeing all your messages and we will be providing information about his treatment here.

Anthony, one of the healthiest and strongest people we all know, has just been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, often referred to as AML. This is a very serious condition that affects blood production and requires hospitalization and immediate medical attention and treatment, which has already started. Anthony began chemotherapy Friday, October 20th and is tolerating it well.

How We Got Here…

Anthony had been feeling fatigued and under the weather for the past few months. He said, “Something just feels off.” He went to see his primary care physician at the end of September and had some blood work done as part of that visit. When he continued to feel fatigued, Dee Dee asked to see his lab results and that’s when it was clear that something was definitely not right. His counts were unbelievably low. So, that evening Thursday October 5th, they went to urgent care to double check the lab results and were sent immediately to the emergency room. Anthony was admitted, given a blood transfusion to stabilize him, and was placed in isolation. Dee Dee was able to stay with him during this time. There were several days of testing, monitoring, blood work, CT scans, and a bone marrow biopsy. Anthony was sent home on Wednesday October 11th for a few days while labs and test results were reviewed and a formal diagnosis was determined. The doctors let Anthony go home on mask/visitor restrictions while awaiting test results and consultation.

Formal Diagnosis…

On Wednesday October 18th, Anthony and Dee Dee met with the hematologist/oncologist. The test results clearly and conclusively indicated AML and, while some test results were still being finalized, immediate treatment was required. Dee Dee and Anthony came home to gather their things and he was admitted to Baptist East in Memphis later that evening. Anthony received a blood transfusion and preparation for chemotherapy began right away. The first chemotherapy drug was administered 48 hours later. They anticipate that he will be hospitalized and in chemotherapy for the next few weeks.

He is in the Myelogenous Clinic at Baptist East. Dee Dee is with him and has been able to stay with him the entire time, even sleeping at the hospital every night on one of those comfy hospital couches. Anthony’s mom, Patricia, has been able to be with him. Due to safety restrictions, only one person can be in the room with him at a time, and guests are limited to close family and friends.

We will do our best to keep you all updated. The family truly appreciates all your support and words of hope and encouragement. Anthony could use some stories of adventures and shared memories, anything uplifting and fun to keep him entertained. He’s a little bored and misses being out in nature.

Dee Dee and Anthony can not easily handle direct calls or messages right now. Angel Blackstone (Dee Dee’s sister) is in town and helping with logistics. You can contact her directly, if you still have questions. (510.517.6204)

Please keep Anthony and his family in your thoughts — Dee Dee, Pat and Tom, his brothers and sisters, Brennan and Jackson, his grandchildren - Toby and Zula Jean, and Dee Dee’s girls. Send them positive and healing energy.

Thank you for visiting. Know that your comments and interaction here are welcome and they help cheer the family.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Angel Blackstone

Excellent news, everybody! We have a very happy update to share with you.

Anthony is on track with his recovery and his new cells are doing just fine! Everything is going well and progress is evident in all of the diagnostics. This initial phase of the bone marrow transplant has been a success.

The results from his chimerism test on Monday, March 18th came back with good results. A chimerism test is a genetic blood test that is performed after a patient receives a stem cell transplant. The test essentially determines how well the patient is accepting the transplant by analyzing the genetic viability of the donor’s and the patient’s genetic material. Anthony’s test results showed 100% donor which is exactly what we had hoped for. It shows that the new cells have durably engrafted. The next big testing milestone will be another bone marrow biopsy in a few weeks. This will allow his doctors to do a full disease evaluation of his leukemia status and assess further treatment. This will likely happen the first week of May.

For the last few weeks Anthony has been going to clinic on Mondays and Thursdays for evaluation and testing (and sometimes a transfusion) — oncologist on Monday, nurse practitioner on Thursday. He has steadily been increasing his counts in platelets and hemoglobin indicating that he is manufacturing his own blood. He has not needed a transfusion in the past couple of weeks. For those keeping score, his white blood count is 8.1 and continues to be in the normal range.  Platelets are at 86 (still low, but increasing) and hemoglobin has gone up a whole point since Monday, April 1st.

All of this is making Anthony’s care team more confident that they can lessen the frequency of monitoring and testing. Beginning next week he will only be going to the clinic once a week. Huzzah!

The other major step that happened this week is the removal of Anthony’s PICC line. He has had it in ever since his admission to the hospital in February. Freedom! All in all, Anthony is having a very good week!

On the home front things are going well, too. This has been their first full week on their own without live-in help. Sam returned to Portland on Saturday, March 30th. However, they’ve been busy. Anthony has been getting his backyard oasis in order with the help of his trusty crew — Allen and Danny. The pool has been opened for the season and Dee Dee even got the planting beds turned and ready for tomatoes. While Anthony can’t dig in the dirt himself, he’s managed to get the garden going with the help of the people who love him…and there are a lot of us!

If anything changes, anything at all, we will definitely get an update out immediately. However, at this point I’m thinking we can almost all breathe a sigh of relief and even allow ourselves a little hope for Anthony’s hiking trip.

Thank you (as ever) for your constant support and positive energy. Anthony, Dee Dee, and the whole family remain grateful and inspired by the outpouring of affection and care from their community.  You’ve been with us and have sustained us on this long journey. We are eternally grateful. Still a way to go, but we are feeling close. Anthony is getting stronger everyday.

Be well, all. Take care.

(I will definitely provide an update after the bone marrow biopsy in May with results and status)
