Journal entry by Becky deWit

Wow,  Remco has been home as long as he was in the hospital and tomorrow we venture back in for his skull cap surgery.   Mixed emotions for all of us,  Excited, releived, nervous....

We are finally getting into a good routine at home.  Coming out of the hospital in July we felt like we needed to catch up and do what we hadn't been able to do since may.  But that lead to hard moments.  So, We have learned pacing, scheduling, resting and routine are our best friends.   Saying no is hard but necessary at times, But it's just for now and not for ever.  That's what I have to keep reminding myself.

Remco has made beautiful advances in healing and we do our best to laugh, joke and keep things light because it's hard.  Times get hard, we have hard moments. So we are learning  everyday how to make things better and easier for him and for all of us.  They keep mentioning its a marathon not a sprint and boy are they right!  Not rushing healing, not rushing getting back to farming, not rushing social events.  It's hard but it's so necessary for the long term healing.

Remco loves being home, loves being on the farm, loves being with his family.  But we are over stimulating at times 😄,  the farm is over stimulating at times, life can be over stimulating for him at times.  It's interesting what we could handle before and now how it can overwhelm you.

Remco has a new super power, his hearing!  He hears everything and all at once.  So this in its self is over stimulating.   Our amazing speech pathologist recommend seeing an audiologist and having ear plugs made.  Life saver!  He has ear plugs for sleeping and ear plugs to wear either in the barn or at social events.  He is now getting a more quality rest which is awesome for healing.   He also loves the plugs when more than a few people are around as it cuts down on all the extra noise (fans, appliances etc) that is going on around him that we might not notice but he notices during conversation.

Remco had an eye appointment in Sept at the Ivey Institute in London for a follow up.  During the exams it was noted that his right eye  peripheral vision wasn't very good.  Since that visit Remco has felt his vision was slipping. Our lovely speech pathologist again hooked us up with a specialist and she has helped with a few things but also reassured him that his vision isn't slipping.  He feels way better just having that reassurance!   So if you see him, he has tape on his glasses. This helps with seeing distances so his brain doesn't have to work as hard.

Remco is working hard and loving the challenge of physio.  Seeing progress with his left arm is awesome!  His left shoulder does have some position issues but again it's nothing we can't work on.  We are fortunate enough to have an assistant therapist come to us 2-3 times a week.  She is a beautiful person to have on our journey.

Remco has been doing really well with his 3 therapists.  Physio, speech pathologist, OT and now an assistant therapist.  We are so so so beyond blessed that we have been able to stay local with them and not having to drive to London as driving is still hard on him.  But this is only due to all the amazing support we have been given.  To everyone that donated.. ( money, food, gift cards, time etc) or has prayed, sent kinds words, thank you ❤ you are amazing.  We would not be where we are with out all the amazing support.   It's so heart warming to know that the world is a very kind and caring place, full of beautiful people.

As we venture on into this journey I am very thankful that I am on this journey.  It could have gone in so many different directions.  We have our hard moments but we have so many good ones too.  This journey is teaching us new lessons in life and I am thankful for that.  It is hard at times being ones spouse, business partner, parenting partner and care giver.  But I wouldn't want it any other way.  I am blessed  to be in the position I am in.   I am thankful for all the love and support.  Please keep being kind and loving to yourself and to others 💕 it makes a difference.
