Reese’s Story

Site created on November 24, 2022

On Friday night, November 18th, Reese started throwing up and thought he had food poisoning or the flu. On Monday his mom took him into the walk in clinic. They then sent him in an ambulance to the ER because his breathing became labored. After doing a cat scan and several other tests, they found that he has acute cardiomyopathy (an enlarged heart) and also found a blood clot in his heart. The decision was made very quickly to have him airlifted to the childrens hospital in Minneapolis. His heart was in critical condition as it was enlarged and could not properly pump blood for his body. He was then intubated and on an Ecmo machine which was hoped to help his heart heal, however there was no improvement made. The decision was then made to put him on the transplant list. Early Wednesday we got the call that a heart had been found. He was able to go into surgery Thursday afternoon which resulted in a successful transplant. He is alert and awake now and focusing on healing. There has never been any indications of any heart defects in the past and the doctors are still working to determine the cause.

Update: Reese is continuing to make great strides in gaining strength and endurance. Further genetic testing for Reese’s family members has begun. So we know the genetic defect that was the cause of Reese’s heart issues runs on moms side of the family. If anyone has any questions feel free to reach out to our family. We are having a benefit for Reese on February 25th from 3-7. Feel free to stop out for some pulled pork, we would love to see you!
