Robert’s Story

Clear Eyes. Full Heart. Can’t Lose. 🤍

Saturday November 5, 2022 started like any normal weekend: we went to our favorite brewery, Bevel, to grab some beers and say farewell to our favorite Bend Foodtruck, Aina. We met our friends Danny & Marissa and stood in line, got our food, and grabbed a table. Amidst an intense conversation about Pickleball, Rob’s head slumped to the table. Marissa and I both being nurses jumped up and got Rob from the chair onto the ground. Rob was agonal breathing. We tried to find a pulse, sternal rub: no response. EMS was dispatched. After about a minute or so being out Rob came out of it.

EMS transferred Rob to St. Charles Bend where they did several rounds of blood work, EKGs, an echocardiogram, and a CT angiogram. It was decided to observe Rob overnight in IMCU (my old unit). Despite very intermittent sleep, his heart rhythm looked good, and with no more symptoms or episodes, Rob was allowed to discharge on Sunday with a Zio patch monitor (Holter Monitor) to give the cardiology team an insight if there were any other events what the trigger may be.

The rest of Sunday and Monday Rob had a few small palpitations but nothing major.

Tuesday November 8, 2022 we woke up around 7 am and were watching TV in bed. Around 7:45am Rob started agonal breathing again, unresponsive. I quickly started CPR and called 911, had to drag his body from the bed to the ground to provide adequate CPR and continue until backup arrived. After coding him for 45 minutes they finally got his pulse back and were able to transfer him to the hospital, where he has remained in stable but critical condition.

Journal entry by Christa Barriga —

Rob is home!!!!

He had an Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD) placed today at the hospital and was discharged home. We are still figuring out the next steps in his follow up care but so grateful for how well he is doing.
